Estonian freestyle skier Kelly Sildaru won gold in the freeski slopestyle event at the Youth Winter Olympics in Lausanne, Switzerland. The 17-year-old topped qualification on 95 points, earning 91.5 and 93.75 points in the next two tests, and 71.5 points in the final.
"It was really nerve-wracking. Especially crazy was the waiting time. If the points fell away, it would be easier. But either fortunately or unfortunately she (Eileen Gu - ed.)did not get more points. I am very happy that I did so well," Sildaru said after the event.
Estonian ice hockey players, twin brothers Marek and Erik Potšinok snatched both historic medals at the 3-on-3 ice hockey tournament. Marek, who won gold in the men’s event with the green team, said that he was prepared to win but the outcome was much better.
Erik, who won bronze with brown team, added that the joy was so much better as he could share his medal moment with his twin brother.
Estonian figure skater Arlet Levandi won gold in the Mixed NOC Team event, representing Team Courage. Skaters of four different nationalities combined to make sure of victory with 24 points. Utana Yoshida and Shingo Nishiyama from Japan gave them the perfect start, with victory in the ice dance. There was a further first place from Russia's Kseniia Sinitsyna in the women's singles. Levandi, who was seventh, said: "I was very happy with the draw, and now we are Youth Olympic champions."
Estonia had two medals from previous Winter Youth Olympics, dating back to 2012, when biathlete Rene Zahkna won two silver medals in sprint and pursuit. As far as Summer Youth Olympic Games are concerned, Estonia had one bronze medal won by Greta Jaanson in rowing in 2018.
The Winter Youth Olympics were held in Lausanne on 9-22 January. Athletes aged 15-18 took part in multi-sport competitions held every four years.
